Hattie McDaniel won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for GWTW. She was the first African American winner of an AA. Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, and Hattie McDaniel were very good friends. They said that working with her was the best part of filming GWTW. Gable tried to organize a boycott of the Atlanta premiere because McDaniel was not allowed to attend. He supported her career until his death. Hattie McDaniel once said, "I would rather play a maid than be one. I am happy to play a maid for $700 per week. Otherwise, I would be a maid for $7 per week."
