My first duty station was in Okinawa, Japan, and I was a small guy. We had a typhoon that hit on my birthday. I just turned 21, and was very drunk. Anyway, being the smallest Marine, I had to craw through the window to open the mess hall (dinning facility) so we could at least make something for the troops. Thar was in August of 1981. Another one hit not long after that, and it almost took me, and the door I was holding on as the wind blew through.

Hurricanes are driven to rotate by the rotation of the earth on its axis. This is called the Coreolis Effect. The Coreolis Effect causes storms (and water going down drains), to always spin counter clockwise in the Northern hemisphere, and clockwise in the Southern hemisphere.

I live in Florida, and you better be prepared because you NEVER know. The news tries their best to give you the necessary heads up, but being prepared, whether you stay put or leave your home, is key. There are times when you may choose to leave, and it follows you.

On the way back home from my first deployment to Beirut in 1982, we went through a storm in the Atlantic. I got tossed around pretty good. Got tossed into a beverage machine, and was pretty bruised. I just laughed. Especially watching silverware, cups, and even some dishes sliding on the tables.
