pitbulmom71, Belize was never under Spanish control. By the time the independent Guatemalans finally arrived, they found that the Brits already had a fully-established colony there (British Honduras). Guatemala had "Belize es nostra!" in their Constitution until the late eighties or so. Belize has a strong parliamentary tradition and has avoided the "strong man rules" problems that have plagued the rest of Latin America.

JellyBaker, my Daddy was stationed at Howard AFB in Panama 🇵🇦 in the late 50s, where my oldest sister was born. We got stationed there again in the late 70s, and we were there when Carter signed the treaty to give control of the canal back to the Panamanian people effective 31 Dec 1999, thus ending the territory formerly known as the Canal Zone. I still have my t-shirt with the seal of the Canal Zone from when I was in 2nd grade. The motto: "The land divided, The world 🌎 united" was on the seal. I loved living there!

I've been to Panama, Costa Rica and Colombia. Loved the canal.
