Billy, They are very rare, maybe at risk. The spur on the paw is only used in self defence. I have only heard of one person being stung, she picked up the platypus to take it off the road, so it wouldn't get run over. I have only seen one once in the wild. Australians would not go near one in the wild out of respect. Only the males have the venous spur.
