I once had a college professor tell me to pick the most complicated answer if there were multiple choices and I was stuck. Teachers rock!

Such a mystery, how very lucky that this happened in a low population zone. For anyone interested there are some excellent documentaries available on YouTube about this event.

comet. made of ice at deep space temperatures, which sublimated directly to vapor from a solid state, exploding as a tremendous shock wave, then dissipating as water vapor, leaving no trace but perhaps a suddenly appearing and vanishing extremely dense cloud.

Mac, It did not land, there is no crater. It was an airburst, which by your own comment means it was not a meteorite.

nimblemoon, excellent advice and unless the photograph is followed by a question, "who is this" the picture never ever has anything to do with the question.

slomogeo, it created thousands of square kilometres of flattened trees, all splayed out in lines away from the centre. In the centre trees remained standing but stripped of their branches.

Mac, except it didn't impact the earth, it exploded many kilometres above ground, so it's not a meteorite.

If a meteoroid enters the Earth's atmosphere and vaporises, it becomes a meteor, which is often called a shooting star. If a small asteroid or large meteoroid survives its fiery passage through the Earth's atmosphere and lands on the Earth's surface, it is then called a meteorite. Therefore the impact cannot have been caused by a meteor but a meteorite.
