Correct answer: Ampersand (&)
Lady V
I had to look it up after reading the comments, there's actually quite a few articles about this. I thought it was interesting, i love this trivia game. We learn something every day!
Belugas&PolarBears
Ironically, we do include it when we sing or say the alphabet in order.. W, X, Y "AND" Z

This is cool! Never knew!
LoneWolf21C
it became ampersand because at the end of the alphabet you had to say "and per se and which became corrupted to ampersand
matizimo
MatteusMaximus, Merriam Webster comfirms this information. Also, I had heard it recently on a program on NPR which was citing sources that had it listed out for children's recitations of the alphabet before the ampersand was removed.
AwesomeAnnie7
in 62 years, I have never heard this.

MatteusMaximus, according to dictionary.com the '&' used to be in the alphabet but wasn't actually called ampersand at the time

Starting the alphabet by saying,
“-and ABC DEFG…” makes freaking sense to me…
That’s why most of the languages stem from Latin, “dang rite merca bits, Yo No?”lol😝😉

i remember my mother telling me she would end the alphabet song like "w,x,y,z and per se and...now....."
Republic of China
There is a YouTube Video about it and also about some words that was once part of the Alphabet... Btw you can just say "W, X, Y, Z" instead of "W, X, Y "AND" Z"

Wow! That’s very interesting because I didn’t think anyone would have their name beginning with the letter “&” can’t imagine the name “&anda”
Joe
VividPotion6704, Not really. In permanent use since Roman times in most western languages. In Shakespeare's handwritten plays you'd probably have found it a lot. But you are right, the name for &, Ampersand, is not that old.

Tom W, I didn't know that, either. Thanks for sharing!

Belugas&PolarBears, and if they recited it that way, maybe they could have considered keeping this as a character, but we'll never know. i don't think other languages have "and" as a letter, so yeah.

very interesting, what I found funny is that in spanish we're sort of saying it in the alphaabet since the letter Y is also a word itself which means 'and' XYZ...
