I love the stars and constellations!

Its astronomical name is ursa major (great bear in Latin), and it can be used to find polaris (the North star), so is handy for navigation.

Years ago when my son was a young boy I tried to point out the big dipper to him, he couldn’t find it and it was then I realized he didn’t know what a dipper was, so I told him to look for the big shopping cart in the sky and he found it immediately.
Player #12570223
The correct answer is 8! One of the stars in the handle of the big dipper is a double star. People with good vision can see it's really 2 stars not one.

Player Descon, Stars do move actually, the Milky Way is moving towards Andromeda at over 2 million miles an hour! Our Galaxy will collide with Andromeda about 4 billion years

You can see the Big Dipper in the Southern Hemisphere too. Not sure why it was thought otherwise.

Technically, the big dipper has eight because one of the stars in the handle is a binary star.
Player #66817220
My understanding, via our local astronomical society, is that the middle of the handle is actually a binary system, i.e. two stars.
