Yukata is likely to be a valid answer for this question. It should therefore either not be an option, or more specifics should be given in the question to determine whether Yukata or Kimono.

WhimsicalRebel377, I've always known the difference to be the material. Yukata is cotton and the kimono made from silk

But why ia yukata the wrong answer when it's what it's called in Japan? Like why even give both options?

AceEnemy23746, a yukata is worth in the summer, also known as summer kimono. I lived there for 5 years, so you can trust me on this.

Ok, I think that this is quite a tricky question and it should have different answers or the question itself should be modified. I have lived in Japan and I own both an yukata and a kimono and the difference between them is the material, the length of the sleeves, the accessories and ect. And on this photo is hard to tell if it's yukata or kimono.

This picture is wrong! It's not either KIMONO or YUKATA. We wear with the right side under the left. The left side under style is Only when we die.😑💀

I own a kimono. It's very comfortable. The sash tying the kimono closed is an obi.

BambiLuv, main difference, yukata is casual summer wear, or indoor at an onsen for example. Kimono is formal wear and normally thicker. The material is not the main difference. I will check with my Japanese friends.

The one in the picture really doesn't look as elegant as a real kimono should be. Shouldn't it be thicker at the waist?

could be both yukata and kimono. I lived in Japan and did wear both. Difference is that yukata is more "fancy" and formal. This picture looks like yukata for me

It's supposed to look like a kimono. But the one pictured is a cheap polyester knock-off, the kind you get in a costume store, so I would say that it's neither. The bottom front hem corner would not droop down if it was a real kimono or yukata.

Yukata or kimono should not both be an option ...

I don't think it could be a Yukata because the obi is wrong. The broad sash obi, knotted in the back would suggest a kimono. (I cannot be sure?)
