Heartland Old Guy, Greek Mythology as far as my understanding doesn't mean that it was fiction seeing as the people then believed in their Greek Gods as Roman's did their Gods. If we all began believing something new in 2000 years, people could refer to Christianity in the same way. In fact I have read comments on here referring to the Bible as Mythology but that doesn't make it fiction since I do believe in it nor in my opinion does it make it any less real for the Greeks. It is a fine line and one that will be debated for a long time to come I imagine.

Birdiemon, yes indeed that sadly seems to be the case with some people. As my dearly departed ((and sometimes sarcastic)) mother would say **the depths of their shallowness is bottomless.**

HIGHLY RESENT Helen being blamed for causing the war! Paris committed the crime that started everything, not her.

Randall Stone, stories about human beings help us understand ourselves. Perhaps those who while so strongly against history are afraid of what they will see inside themselves. we persist.

How can Helen have "caused the war" by "being abducted" by someone?

Player #38618593, According to the Iliad, it wasn't either of their faults. Menopause was chosen by Helen to marry her. He, knowing ALL the men wanted to marry her. made them all promise to come to his aid if any of them abducted her. Hera, Aphrodisiac, and Athena had Paris choose which one of them was most beautiful. They all offered bribes: Artemis offered wisdom, Hera offered power, Aphrodisiac offered him the most beautiful woman in the world. Being shallow and not terribly bright, Paris chose Helen

Player #10416048, agree completely! Pretty bad wording referring to Helen as “the woman who caused the war”. Paris caused it.

Heartland Old Guy, Homer wrote about the most important event of the war, the killing of Hector. He didn't write about the causes, the first years nor the end. The war is supposed to have been well known before he wrote the Iliad. His version of events probably became famous because it was comprehensive and so well written. Aphrodite was a goddess, so it's difficult to know any facts about her. In fact, there are even conflicting locations for her birth.

I never was sure if Helen felt anything for Paris. her husband seemed to want her returned so maybe he cared for her. I love myths. my favorite is about Medusa and perseus.

Technically, you could have said "all the above". The three goddesses staged a competition and the apple was awarded to Aphrodite who, in turn, promised Paris the love of the most beautiful woman on earth.
