Lee was enlisted in the Union army prior to the Civil War. He was from Virginia. When it became apparent that a war was going to happen, he joined the Confederacy because he would not draw weapons against his birthplace. Appomattox Courthouse was the first time Lee and Grant saw each other since the Mexican- American war.

ellavision1, There is nothing ‘meant to be’ about war. God is nowhere in that equation, free will brought slavery and that was the biggest stain and disgrace since the slaughter and displacement of Native Americans.

PEOPLECONVENIENTLY FORGET THAT JEWS WERE SLAVES TO THE EGYPTIANS FOR OVER 400 YEARS. OTHER GROUPS WERE SLAVES AT VARIOUSTIMES. SOLOMON SAID THERES NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN. THERE WAS MORE REASONS FOR THE CIVIL WAR THAN SLAVERY.

Melode, You are correct !! On the Confederate side, a lot of that war was about States Rights. As far as slavery is concerned, an inconvenient truth : Black's started slavery in Africa and enslaved each other, so you are correct again : slavery wasn't a new concept started by America and Britain !!

Unlike many of his time, Robert E. Lee never owned slaves, he would have also have been a more upright and less corrupt President than Union General and President Ulssyes S. Grant who was in one political scandal after another !! What a crook !!

Player #19719147, you are 100% wrong about this. Robert E. Lee was the administrator of the Custis family estate. The custom slaves were under contract to clear some land for sale in exchange for their freedom. The slaves dawdled on their work. They thought they would have their freedom when Custis died, and did not understand their contract. Lee took them to court where things were made clear. The slaves completed the work, and were eventually granted their freedom. Robert E Lee never owned a slave in his life.

Brilliant general, and extremely loyal to his home state of Virginia. He did not support slavery contrary to what many people think. He would have been considered one of America’s greatest military minds if he would have fought for the North.

Player #46363221, While enslaving others has been around since the dawn of time, enslavement based PURELY on the color of one's skin was a new development that was wrongly defended by conveniently picked parts of the Bible and just "happened" to make enslavers richer.
