He waited over 40 years for his second Oscar nomination and he won for obvious sentimental reasons as he was dying. He should have gotten it in 1940 for The Grapes of Wrath but it went to best friend James Stewart for a lightweight supporting role in The Philadelphia Story. He was robbed! Stewart won for another "holdover" award since he lost the previous year for Mr Smith Goes to Washington. The first "holdover" award went to Bette Davis in 1935 for Dangerous since she wasn't even nominated for Of Human Bondage.

Radakyl, - You're correct to suggest There Was A Crooked Man as an example of Fonda's great work, but I don't think it showed his remarkable range as well as Golden Pond or a couple of his other movies. Just my humble opinion.
