I remember in the 50s I had just bought a single "What a difference a day makes" by US Jazz star Dinah Washington. They played it on the show. None of the Jury had heard of her and they voted it a miss. Worse still she made a guest appearance on the show. I squirmed with embarrassment. A week later it went into the charts. Whether they got it right or wrong seemed to make no difference to the record buying public.
