It was mostly a made- up name, in Victorian times, when they were promoting tourism. Many places in Wales are called Llanfair ( holy place of Mary) so to distinguish them they would add a local landmark. In this case Llanfair pwllgwyngyll. (On post abbreviated to Llanfair P.G.). However, someone had the idea of expanding further, then adding in the nearby Llantysilio ( Holy place of Tysilio). The railway was coming and they had the new extended name on platform tickets, sold as souvenirs. They still do, even though the railway line is now closed. To the locals it was a joke and a money spinner - it was never used seriously. It is still Llanfair P.G. to them.

Portia, And I can spell it. Out loud! ( Easy if you know the language and what each bit means.)
