I got to visit and it was incredible . There is an interior pyramid that you have to your after you climb the incredible narrow steps of the exterior .

we hiked it in 3 days nearly 45 years ago, before it was popularized and only saw 6 other people on the whole trip. wouldn't want to go back with a 500 hikers a day capacity and a waiting list

Did it in '99, the last year you could do it without being part of an organised tour. Stunning. And that Machu Picchu will look great when it's finished... 😉

sillybee, We did it in 4 days in 2008. I asked our guide if we were the slowest team he’d ever taken. His diplomatic reply was we were wise to pace ourselves in the high altitude. He was grateful not to have to carry us off the mountain, which he’d had to do in the past. We actually witnessed an 18-year old collapse from altitude sickness and have to be carried off. Because we were so slow we actually had the trail to ourselves so it was never crowded for us. The sight of Machu Picchu was so rewarding at the end that I burst into tears. I don’t think I would’ve had that reaction had I skipped the trail and rode the train in.

sillybee, We finished the Inca trail in 4 days in 2008. I asked the guide if we were the slowest group he’d ever had and he diplomatically replied that we were wise to manage our pace in order to handle the high altitude. He was glad not to have to carry us off the mountain like he’s done before. And it has nothing to do with age, we watched an 18-year old collapse and get carried off because he didn’t take altitude into account. Because we were so slow, we only encountered two people at the start of the trail and had the rest of it to ourselves until the end. The sight of Machu Picchu was so rewarding I had tears streaming down my face. I don’t think bypassing the trail and justgo

sillybee, We did it in 4 days 17 years ago. Even though the camp sites were abuzz, we only met 2 people while we were climbing because we were so slow.

Machu Picchu is really a wonderful place for tourism, it shows the architectural marvel of the South American Inca civilization. A must visit place for those who like to see historical sites and landmarks.
