What is the main symptom of tonsillitis?

Had my tonsils taken out when I was 5. Pretty standard procedure back in the 40s and 50s. Drs didn't think b they served purpose. Now they are fairly sure they do have a use. just don't quite know what that purpose is.

My daughter recently had her tonsils removed and she no longer a child; I wasn't aware that she would need that done.
