Vikings may have come well before that. Some believe there is evidence in the Kensington Rune Stone found in MN. The Vikings were great explorers and I am proud to be of their lineage! Skøl!

somewhere in the state of Connecticut is a building, not too large, the sole function is to allow the morning rays of the summer solstice to shine on the back of the building. I don't think Mayflower guys built this.

I am of Icelandic heritage on both parents side. What I love about this picture is the helmets. I get tired of seeing Vikings wearing helmets with horns...they never had horned helmets. I have no idea where that came from. Proud to be descended from Vikings.

Grillchees, you should be proud, my sons are descendants of Vikings too, paternally. And I'm not much on math, but if he was born in Iceland 970 A.D., but expelled from there in 985 A.D., then he was only 15 when he killed a guy then expelled. correct??...

Grillchees, Stones like that have been found in various places in America, one in my state of North Carolina, found behind a church in an very old cemetery, I will name the town but this particular stone is hidden by the family and lawyers are helping keeping the stone safe, Smithsonian institution wants it but the family does not want to give it up to them , ridiculous and true,

It goes to show that humans are an exploring people. The so called native or indigenous people of North America came from elsewhere. They're not like a plants or insects that are unique to the land.

KnowThyself, Some of the Native Americans have at least partial Polynesian DNA. Basically, native americans as a whole were the ones who found the american lands and settled permanently there. Yay native americans!

Vikings had a settlement in North America exactly one thousand years ago, centuries before Christopher Columbus arrived in the Americas, a study says. Leif Erikson, Leiv Eiriksson, or Leif Ericson,[note 1] also known as Leif the Lucky (c. 970 – c. 1019 to 1025), was a Norse explorer who is thought to have been the first European to have set foot on continental North America, approximately half a millennium before Christopher Columbus.[6][7] According to the sagas of Icelanders, he established a Norse settlement at Vinland, which is usually interpreted as being coastal North America. There is ongoing speculation that the settlement made by Leif and his crew corresponds to the remains of a Norse settlement found in Newfoundland, Canada, called L'Anse aux Meadows, which was occupied 1,000 years ago (carbon dating estimates 990–1050 CE).[8][9][10]

Alan, unkind and needless comment. Mostly all explorers were as you described. They came to "get the goods" from anywhere they found them. Vikings were pretty brave to head out on the Atlantic in their wooden boats for parys unknown!
