Which items commonly found in the produce department were once called “love apples”?

Love our home grown tomatoes. The kids in our neighbourhood eat them like lollies. They are so flavoursome! They taste like tomatoes are supposed to taste like!

I thought that they still are in Italian:"pomadora"; sp?
