there was a movie I saw in my law class called Murder In The first. Kevin Bacon played an inmate who was arrested.. for stealing a loaf of bread..they sent him to Alcatraz. Back in the 1930s most stores had a post office inside. So it was considered a federal crime.

Player Say what!?, Actually, Robert F. Stroud a.k.a. The Birdman of Alcatraz, never had birds at The Rock. He did, however, have them at Leavenworth Penitentiary. Only after he was transferred to Alcatraz did he write his books on birds & he also penned stories of Pedophilia. He was a violent man & very few people liked him. The 1962 Movie portrayed a falsehood that many people believed.

I toured it once. Seen is Al Capone's cell and The Birdman of Alcatraz's. The birdman's cell was quite large to accommodate his many bird cages.
