What do we call a society where men hold most of the power?

In WW II the Engineers' Union was compelled to admit women, and my mother trained as an engineer. At the end of the war the Union was allowed to change the rule back and so - with the greatest regret - , her manager had to let many of his "shining stars" go back to nursing and "nice" office jobs. They said homecoming soldiers would " need" those jobs back - forgetting just how many thousands would never come back or be unable to work any longer. Only a male- dominated society shut women out of select occupations ( usually using Union Membership) or made men feel unable to do what they wished. When barriers - social or legal - come down then caring men can care and scientifically minded women -or anyone - can follow their dreams. Haven't you heard of "house- husbands"?

Gender roles arose organically, due to natural human evolution. There is no grand conspiracy to keep women in the kitchen in a some sort of misogynistic oppression system. Women are good with people, men are good with things. For millennia, men were the protectors, the bread winners, the ones who went out there to bring the bacon home. While women stayed home to care for the children, the elderly, and the sick. Make a highly adaptive species repeat this generation after generation over millenia, and you end with the modern result.
