Killi, I believe Uther puts Excalibur in the stone. Arthur being his son is able to remove it later. I believe there is a time when Arthur breaks Excalibur and Merlin takes him to the lady of the lake to get it repaired. that's how he knows to send paerceval there.

Throughout my life I’ve read a ton of different versions of the Arthurian legend. I still believe that the best one is the 4 books by Mary Stewart, the first one being The Crystal Cave. It starts when Merlin is a young boy. And NaxosAghiaAnna is right, seeing Tintagel was a wonder.

The first story was Geoffrey of Monmouth in a 12th century version. He wrote of its origins only, ‘Caliburn, [Excalibur] best of swords, was forged within the Isle of Avallon’ which removes its mystical origin and states clearly where it was made. The first to speak of its origin from a stone is Robert de Boron in his poem Merlin, later in the 12th century, it is made clear the sword in the stone is not Excalibur as it is broken in battle and is replaced by the Excalibur from the lake.

Player #16557787, Oooh! I'm not sure if I've ever seen this one before. It sounds familiar, so mayB I saw it when I was a kid? None-the-less, I shall watch it again. If you haven't watched the BBC series, Merlin that has the late Anthony Hurt voicing the dragon, please do. It portrays Merlin as a young lad & is absolutely one of my favorites!

If I remember correctly the sword in the stone was just to find the king. Excalibur came later. For a different version of the Arthurian legend you should read Marion Zimmer Bradley's "Mists of Avalon".
