What is the primary function of a watch?
Correct answer: Telling time

Dorothy, A perfect example of the rule "form follows function".As people's lives became more governed by time, they needed a portable measuring device. First the pocket watch, then the wrist watch. Now the mobile phone. Just wondering what's next - brain implants?

LadyC313, The artificial _measurement_ of time is certainly man- made. However, the majority of living things must have somme rudimentary time sense, causing them to sleep, reproduce, migrate, hibernate, etc. at the appropriate time. Maybe keyed to daylight or temperature. Who decided on the human ways of dividing it up, is something for historians to debate. Usually by looking for the earliest references to it - which constantly moves things back.
