UK children of my generation (60+) had satchels or a brief case. The satchels were usually leather and carried over one shoulder, given the weight of the books in those days they were terribly bad for the back and posture. I do remember some people had a satchel with two straps that was supposed to be carried in much the same way as a backpack, but never was !

I remember when I was a kid there were no backpacks, we used our arms and sometimes we used a strap to hole the books together. Heck back then we even had book covers , sone were made from paper bags.
