Wendell Thomas, so sorry us family had to endure such stupidity...but on the subject of racist monuments. confederate flag, street names etc etc.. All represent the history of this country. .Can't change it. .& our grandkids etc need to know this..& know how wrong...if we erase these monuments etc then why don't we erase all...start our country from today...no one should 4get ...if people put as much effort into the good of community / concentrating on the history WE are making now instead protesting history we can not change, this world would benefit & as would we...

shady2slim, the way the liberal minded government and offended pubic are these days our history is going to be obliterated. History is what is written and the victors are usually the ones that wright it. Least we never forget this monument celebrates the worst war America has ever fought with more American causalities than any other war. Brother against brother in some cases. Slavery ended a long time ago and there are no more former slaves. Let’s just get over it and let history be history.

Sherri
Stone Mountain is absolutely amazing! I was there in 1987; and climbed to the top with my daughters & husband. You can also buy beautiful leather Stone Mountain purses.

Bec
shady2slim, I agree. It's been said history will repeat itself if we forget the past. We have to continue learning about the past and exposing our youth to sights which perhaps are racist, sexist, etc...

Duck1967
General Santa Anna stated, "If you do not learn from history, you are destined to repeat it." Many people say that one needs to know history, but I agree with the General - there is a difference between knowing about something and learning from it. I'd prefer to learn from other people's mistakes so I won't have to experience them like they did.

Tod825, and don't forget how many of them white folks died for slave freedom..... I feel like everybody forgets about that part.....??

Tod825,Also please keep in my that Slavery that does exist anywhere anymore STILL exists in Africa among Black Overlords or In Muslim Countries where women are virtually "slaves"😢

Sherri, I never knew that this existed. wow!

Sandyberry
I've been there many times and it's never failed to amaze me.

Chrispy
Duck1967, not quite. general Santa Anna was known for his role in the battle of the Alamo among other military battles.
But it was George Santayana, who was a Spanish-American philosopher, poet, and humanist who made important contributions to aesthetics, speculative philosophy, and literary criticism. he said the quote you are speaking of.

shady2slim, please, people, do leave the historical flags, buildings, statues, cemetery alone, preserve them, etc,,be proud that we have come a long way to improve our beautiful country and our true history is a big part of the country’s status today!

Ken
slavery was only part of the reason for creating the confederacy. it was also not the only reason that the union and Abe Lincoln fought the war. Its history. personally, I think it was sick and sadistic unthinkable acts of inhumanity ever to have scourged the earth.

Player #42677098, That's just a narrow minded view of Americans voting out the racist, homophobic, serial liar cheat who never should have been in The White House.

ManiacalMedusa73962, I climbed to the top about 8 years ago. nearly killed me. muscle cramps and dehydration. beautiful view

Stone mountain Ga is beautiful I live about an hour from there, and have been there many times. I have a good time every time I go with my family. Get over this racist garbage. It's history, my family never had slaves.

shady2slim, The point is that a monument CELEBRATES the person or event depicted, so how does that teach our grandkids that those people were, as you said, "wrong"?
Surely we can teach our history without "Racist monuments, confederate flag, street names etc etc".

bookssugarplum22
that photo is not of Stone Mt. I've been there and climbed it many times.

We don't need statues and monuments to know and learn from our history. Are there statues of Hitler or monuments to Nazi soldiers in Germany? Of course not. They are a shameful chapter in German history and the Confederacy should be treated the same way here in the US. The South fought to keep enslaving and brutalizing black people. There is no honor in that.

Whenever I hear the song Footloose I think of the Stone Mtn laser show back in the 80s. But mostly the intense confederate pride there was...interesting...to observe.
