Where did the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster happen?
Correct answer: Ukraine

Magpie1113
My friend had to evacuate Chernobyl when she was a young teen. Still tears up sometimes when she remembers how they had hours to evacuate and what a beautiful, peaceful place it WAS. So sad. RIP to all that perished

I'm speechless. OK here's 2 words-- profoundly irresponsible.

The answer should be USSR. When that catastrophe happened Ukraine was part of USSR.

rogerka
I was there recently. strong stories of people...

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. the video game is practically a virtual tour of the surrounding landscapes.
it's pretty creepy, with alot of actual documentary content also.

Hopefully this disaster is as close to a nuclear winter as anyone will get, and lessons will have been learnt. God bless the poor souls who died, or are still being affected.

richbaumel
Scientists from the University of Portsmouth created "Atomik" vodka, a spirit made with exclusion zone grain and water, making it the first consumer product to come from the area around the abandoned nuclear power plant. Chernobyl is the site of the world's worst nuclear disaster, which resulted in thousands of deaths

I was 11 at the time, but remember clearly how they told us it is all safe to eat the spring vegetables and salads, altough the rain had brought the radiation over. They were more scared to let the world know how they messed up, more scared than the consequences for people's health...

CyanJaguar62
The current savage war in Ukraine made it easy to answer this. God bless the people of Ukraine fighting for the right to live free in their own country!

Nate,
If Chris Tarrant’s comment was so memorable, don’t you think you should have shared it?

tia
I've recently read that stray dogs living within the exclusion zone have developed adaptations to increase their resistance to the effects of the high radioactivity. I believe they're monitored/fed by officials

Sundance, my Welsh farmer friend was banned from selling his sheep or wool for over ten years after the event, the contamination lasted at least that long.

I remember when it happened. so sad

Nate
All this Chernobyl stuff is very sad but interesting. I very much remember what was responsible for the incident and how it wiped most of the population there and why they had to evacuate. That place has been abandoned for a long while now. I remember what Chris Tarrant said on his visit there at the start of the year on TV on his Railway Extreme.
