whetting is only if liquids are used on the stone, otherwise it is grinding.

whetting is correct; however, polishing is also a description of what is happening. whetting is smoothing or polishing off the edge at a particular angle. You can polish a blade straight (holding the blade at 90 degrees) across the edge and it will be shiny, but dull as a hammer.

from Oxford Languages:"Old English hwettan, of Germanic origin; related to German wetzen, based on an adjective meaning ‘sharp’." if anyone is interested :)

I guessed whetting because I know some knives, like my kitchen knives need to be wet when sharpening.

wildcoaster1, wow! I remember that poem from Grade 6 in 1978! One of my favourite poems as it brings home the love of and the pull of the ocean. Extracts are: "I must down to the sea again..." and "it's a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied"

chicken wing, wet your whistle/ whet your appetite. I remember a segment in a book that told about steins that had a whistle as part of its build ( possibly in the handle) that would only work when the mug was empty. If you wanted another, you blew the whistle. The title was Wet Your Whistle, but I don’t remember if they claimed that’s where the saying came from

Cats, IKR. I got a set of “sharp “ knives for Xmas one time. When they later needed sharpening, my dad said it couldn’t be done because of the serration on the edges. It made me use knives less because, growing up, our knives were always kept sharp. I’m clumsy enough without a knife that can’t slice.
