By what name is the fear of heredity known?
Correct answer: Patroiophobia

CiaransMom, Neuro-linguistic programming *is* taught in some university psychiatry programs as a treatment useful for some phobias. Don't mistake a treatment not being taught at one level of higher studies (undergrad psychology) or in one country or another for proof that it is invalid. Nor should one assume that because a treatment isn't for every phobia (or for that matter, for any condition or disease) it is therefore not a valid treatment. In terms of psychiatric treatments, different meds work, or not, for different folks and treatments like desensitization therapy, while effective for some major phobias, would be overkill for some minor ones (and the patient might refuse help thus prolonging needless suffering). You are obviously smart. Just be more judicious in what you leap to calling "quackery".

That feeling of deep churning in the chest and stomach from fear is a terrible feeling because it's so hard to shake it off. I have anxiety, OCD and mild depression. I had gotten so bad that I ended up with agoraphobia. This was when my boys were young which made life difficult not being able to leave the house to handle normal responsibilities and run errands. I finally went to a Dr, take a mild depressant and went to counseling as well. That was 17 years ago!

InglorionEvershon, exposure treatments, when done properly, are very beneficial for some phobias as well. They take longer

InglorionEvershon, thanks for so much guided information. as one who suffers various phobias it's good to hear from someone who knows what they're talking about for a change.

I might not have kids because of this. my family has a history of mental illness and hereditary trauma, (epegenetics) so I'm doing the work now to at least help break the generational trauma. If i do decide to have them in the future, they will be a little better off :)

Fearing heredity works best if you're still a twinkle in your father's eye, if you get my point .

I used to be terrified of birds, especially dead ones. When I was living alone the first time with two cats who were avid hunters, they forced me to face my fear of birds. I call it feline desensitisation therapy lol
I'm terrified of heights. My cats were no help with that.

Louboo4444, I’m not a dr. but taking a depressant when you have mild depression doesn’t sound right. Maybe you should get a second opinion or see a different dr. or speak with a pharmacist? Something please.

InglorionEvershon, a common hallmark of quack remedies is that their proponents present them as cure-alls for every condition in any situation -- the opposite of your thoughtful, measured presentation of NLP.

It's pater (πατήρ) which is ancient Greek and means father. Latin borrowed lots of words from ancient Greek. You have to correct those mistakes

OzzysUndies,
I used to think I had a fear of heights but, then I realized it was really a fear of falling that I had. l guess depending on from how high up you fall from it could be fear of both. I decided finally that since, like poker, l don't control the hand I get I may as well enjoy the game and hope for that ultimate winning hand. Other than that all I can hope for is a fall from ground level with no injuries or better yet no falls at all.
