A few basic rhythms and drum rolls? The author of this question is obviously unaware of drummers like Neil Peart, Phil Collins, Bill Bruford, Carl Palmer...

RushMama2112, ...and my father who was the youngest at 16 to earn a musicians union card in Ohio as a percussionist. He persued his musical education at Ohio State University and played in the US Army band, then in hundreds on bands across the country. He finally put diwnnhus dticks at age 88. RIP Dad.

It's a blast to be a percussionist! I was lucky enough to do it from age 9 to 24 and was the only girl playing in the orchestra and band the whole time. The boys always wanted to play the snare drum so I started on the timpani and that became my instrument. You can play 5 at a time, even harmonizing with yourself. Fun!!!
