Montana Lady, oh, read the question again. The plant is an orchid and when pollinated the bean is picked which has the vanilla flavour. FYI, they are pollinated by hand, and therefore are very time consuming and expensive to buy. They only have a window of few hours to pick them to ensure they're at their best!!

Scruff.Diddles, me either!! I knew it came inside a bean but I did not know it was a flower

Sami, the bean is encased by the 'pod'.

All plants have a seed of some sort. The seed of this particular orchid is in the form of a pod we call a vanilla bean... make sense now?

Once again, a slave provides something beneficial to human kind. Well, it is to me. I love vanilla. It is not just plain or ordinary; it is a very complex flavor not something artificially produced. God is good. Second and third among my favorites are coffee and chocolate.

Almost everything processed and vanilla flavored doesn't get flavored from the vanilla pod but is artificially flavored with vanillin. Actual vanilla is very expressive because of the manual pollination process.
