Sarah, Although it is not the norm, the picture of a Phoenix is portrayed as either an overly grandious peacock or a red peacock engulfed in flames. Granted that tends to lean more toward the Oriental as opposed to the European views.

Anyone heard of the bird called Paiza\Piaza of American Indian lore. There is a large depiction of it on the side of a cliff along the 'Great River Road' between East Alton and Grafton Illinois. Indians lived on top of those cliffs overlooking the River Mississippi to Pierre Marquette State Park past Grafton. Well worth the visit if time permits.
