I'm British and I am aware of the word galoshers but always associated the word with waterproof boots it is little used now. In the Britain the normal word for waterproof footwear are Wellingtons. Named after the Duke and the introduction of vulcanised rubber.

Wow, what a diverse group of players...in the MidWest US, "rubbers" are for birth control, "Wellies" are big, heavy boots, "gum shoes" are detectives, and slip on shoe protectors are "over shoes". Love reading all your responses!

Not sure about the UK reference as the only things we wear here are wellies: Wellington Boots... the only use of galloshes I know is in a Chubb Rock song where he says "I wear my galloshes, so I can protect myself..." though I think he may be referring to another rubber-based product... :D
