Forgive my spelling if I made any errors but originally Mexico City was home to the Aztecs. The city, which was built on a lake and the three main powers filled in much of the lake with dirt but deliberately designed it to be like a moat around the city in order to prevent attacks and making it near impenetrable at least until a group of strangers showed up one day. Although, this did Montezuma little good when Cortez came since he was originally invited in to the city and with the help of tribes decimated due to their ever growing need for sacrifices they joined together to take the Aztecs out. However, later as settlers filled in the rest of the lake to grow Mexico City atop the Aztec ruins it became the reason that the earthquake many years ago was so deadly as so many tall buildings are not on stable ground. I recommend checking out the history as it is very fascinating.

LoopyLynda74, As I read about Cortez, it was his jealousy & greed that such a civilization was so far advanced, was his main reasons for slaughtering all of the Aztecs. Cortez then stole all their treasures and destroyed the majority of the rest of their great city. The Aztecs treated him kindly and were a peaceful people. They did sacrifices solely for their beliefs to their Gods, including that the sun would rise again the next day. It is a shame that they built Mexico city over the once beautiful & historic ruins of the Aztecs.

Clothilde, Yes it is; Mexican people have awesome wedding receptions because of the food; there is a dish known as "Mole" it is made of Chocolate; pumpkin seeds (Pepitas), spices (not necessarily hot) it goes on chicken and served with rice; just making myself hungry and wanting it; some other time I will write about the Christmas food--Tamales ohhh the cuisine as you write is fabulous; beautiful to be learning; right? God bless all!

The author needs to learn the difference between "amount" and "number." If you can count something, like museums, use number. If not, amount is correct.

Mexico also has a very high crime rate and terrible sewerage/water treatment system in most towns and cities, partly due to poor & under-developed farming hygiene contaminating its water supplies. Many people have to soak their vegetables & fruits in a blue sterilizing solution before eating them and use bottled water to brush their teeth. Hydatid parasite risk is very high, so don't let the shower water get in your mouth. A shame, because it's otherwise a beautiful country, rich in history & culture.
