It actually measures angles. Combined with trigonometry you can then calculate distance height etc.

A sextant is used to measure the angle of an object in the sky from the horizon. This figure is then used in a calculation to determine latitude.

It's amazing that these have been around for so long. How did someone realise that this was possible?

It measures the angular distance between two visible objects. It means - measures angles!!! Not the distance.

It only measures distance incidentally as a way to determine latitude.

Me and My sister does this game when the answer is always the longest, and sometimes it's not but most of the time it is, and when it says something with "all the answers are correct" we just choose that, this time it helped again; sometimes even pictures help as well, like this one.

So it's to measure angles not distance. Distance is calculated FROM the angle.

we used sextants when I was in navigation in the U.S. Navy. Not easy. About 5 years in they stopped using them, unless you got a salty old Chief who old school😉

Fabulous question. I was just discussing what a sextant was used for with my 9 year old son this morning but I didn't know how they navigated out in the middle of the ocean with no land marks. I got distracted with his other homework so didn't pursue any additional info. Then low and behold this game gave me the answer. Thanks! 😁

If you can find one, I'll take it off your hands. Learned to use one on a Navy Carrier once ( The Nimitz), years ago, they are easier than you think 😉
