As a devote fan of The Smiths and Morrissey this was easy. Had no idea about his 2nd rank culture status. Or that his lyrics are study academically. But I’m not surprised.

Girlfriend In A Coma and Panic are my favourite Smiths songs while not being a massive fan, I have to agree that culturally they had a massive impact in the 80s and that Johnny Marr is a great guitarist who is very underrated by those who don’t know about The Smiths or their music

One of my favourite bands, and also my 15 year old son.Marr on lead guitar was outstanding, along with Morrisey's lyrics blended together beautifully. Not music to cheer you up,granted.None the less, you can't be ecstatic all the time.

Grew up listening to The Smiths as my dad was and is a massive Smiths fan

I knew the answer although I can't stand The Smiths, I'm afraid most of their stuff sounds like music to cut your throat to, but I know that they have millions of fans.

it would be great if he could actually sing more than 3 notes...

penawareof, I would probably agree with you especially since it was the WB's Charmed that made the song famous but ironically it was covered by Echo & the Bunnymen I believe! Although not battling depression now, I often listened to The Smiths. In particular the song Asleep. Morrissey knew how to make great music.

Their most famous song is probably "How Soon is Now?"
