Originally Virginia and West Virginia were one state. They separated for some reason. possibly slave and free state prior to civil war. too late to look it up for verification.

The original colonists wanted to make the new world in the image of the old world that they left, some against their will, hence the word new added to the old world names - New England, New York, New Jersey etc...
