Can't help but think of Jeff Foxworthy's bit about men vs women talking on the phone to an old friend..."Wally, you old bald headed pervert! How are ya?" Women never say "Janet, you fat pig! You water-retaining sea cow! How are you?!"
Ben's Girl
lots of them in Florida where we live!! beautiful animals
FinchTrekker
snorkelling alone I had a shock to find myself being watched by a manatee. took me a few seconds of panic to realise what it was and, not being a maneater, to then enjoy the short time it stuck around. have seen more amazing sealife via snorkel than scuba.

We have a similar animal here in Australia, called the Dugong. They eat the sea grass
Suekirider
Funny, because about 2 hours before I started playing tonight, I was talking to my boyfriend on the phone and he said he was going to take me to see manatees (he called them Sea Cows) because since I moved to Florida, I have never seen one. Cool.
SparkyChaz2018
For me this was an easy question, because I am totally fascanated by the manatee. They do not possess the natural cuteness of a dolphin or the stunning beauty of a whale shooting freely up from the water. Yet, the manatee has a beauty and cuteness all its own. The manatee's calm and gentle movements, especially when they are swimming with their young, provides the manatee it's iwn soecial warm beauty.

What about the Australian Dugong? The only difference is the name

Manatees are 1 of my favorite mammals. They are so gentle and lovingly care for their young.

In South Africa one of the 11 official languages is Afrikaans. In Afrikaans, a hippopotamus is "seekoei" - which, if translated directly I to English, would be sea cow
Jenn Natalia

I once petted a manatee on the back while snorkeling and it rolled over for me to rub it’s belly. Wonderful experience.

I saw manatees when I went to Florida, they are so cute

mellowdeeee, awww how amazing! I'd love to even SEE one in the wild. I'm not sure IF they visit Aussie waters and DON'T THINK so, though they MAY do in warm Queensland or Northern parts here? ;-) 😉 LOVE their faces ♥️

Ben's Girl, they have also been very utilitarian in keeping water channels free from all the dense vegetation that would otherwise choke the channel.

in Afrikaans a hippopotamus is called a 'seekoei'
stookdog
Ben's Girl, my daughter in law was a mermaid in a show at weekee wachee in Florida. manatees would swim into the area where the show was performing, they would just swim around very friendly, got a few big sea tortoises too!
Rikki
mellowdeeee, that actually sounds amazing. How fortunate that you are able to do that.

Here in the Philippines, on the Pacific side, we have the dugong. And we have a president called Digong, a common Filipino nickname for Rodrigo.

It is said Columbus mistook manatees for mermaids saying they “we’re not half as beautiful as they we’re painted!” They have been described as having human like eyes, even so, it would take a significant amount of rum to mistake one for a mermaid!
