Its interesting that we owe the majority of the debt to ourselves. Currently our government owes 3 trillion to the Social Security Trust and another 5.8 trillion to other departments.

chaser, yeah, we borrow from China, Japan, the American people (savings bonds...), & a few others, so we can give to other countries... and dig our nation more deeply into debt.

If you own US Savings Bonds you hold part of the national debt. Governments always carry debt in the modern age.
