Most northern hemisphere freshwater eels are spawned in the Sargasso Sea (the adult then dies)and the elvers float around the ocean for several years before making their way to freshwater streams and inlets on both sides of the Atlantic. They can climb the rock behind waterfalls and travel for kilometres over dry land to find a suitable habitat. It is not known where Southern hemisphere eels spawn (somewhere in the South Pacific) but the ones in New Zealand are huge ,well worth a Google.
