Our measurements are very mixed up in Britain, but it does mean that we all know what both our traditional measurements mean and the metric ones too. Our roads are still measured in miles but we buy or milk in litres. At least our currency is decimal. It was very complicated before 1971.

The (unexplained) furlong is 220 yards and is now really only of importance in horse racing.

A long time ago - about 1970, the US was considering changing to the metric system. Someone in my office complained that every measurement would have to be translated. “No,” I said, “you just have to learn to think in meters and centimeters!!”
