Gem cart, At that time after the Pericles golden age Athenians were severely corrupted in heart and in mind... Socrates tried to sustain the damage by teaching the young people ethics... In result the young ones saw the corruption and opposed it.That concerning the " corruption" of youth. Impiety was supposed to be the accusation that actually convicted him bcs he said that all of his teaching came from the " demons in his head" giving the impression that he was dehonoring the gods.... It was the biggest parody of a trial and after the defeat in Siracuses everybody regretted it... Actually the Greeks still regret it....

MARIA_MEG, So true! We still regret having wronged such a wise man! I am Greek and I have studied how much he was loathed for speaking against the religious establishment of his time. He spoke of one God and taught people to think for themselves. His most famous saying is: "One thing I do know; that is that I know nothing"

if he were alive today the ruling classes would most like put him in prison because he would speak against their corruption.

First, I thought his idea that he should be given a government wage and food, was genius! Sadly, he and so many others, were punished for teaching ethics and promoting peace. What a travesty!! Bless him!

Gem cart, Copernicus proving the earth is round? I think you need to read up on the topic. People all over the world knew that quite well for thousands of years. Also, Socrates was given the choice of exile or death and he did not choose exile.

With such geniuses of the day it seems he could’ve talked his way around laws and policies. Perhaps the Greeks and Roman’s battled against genius. Galileo was imprisoned, Copernicus executed for proving the earth round. Some went with the powerful though. Alexander the Great was mentored by Aristotle.

I READ THAT HIS PUPIL PLATO AND OTHER FRIENDS TRIED TO CONVINCE HIM TO LEAVE GREECE, BUT SOCRATES WOULDNT.
