How do sharks breathe?

Wonderful creatures which are a necessity to the health of our oceans. I wish I could get my hands on the bastards that lop their fins off, before throwing them back alive.

Water goes through their mouths and then across their gills

Technically they do in fact breathe through their mouths as well. It’s the like asking how a human breathes and then saying “with their lungs” instead of “through their nose and/or mouths”. Water is drawn in through the mouth and out through the gills. And if they stop moving for too long they suffocate because unlike most fish they do not have muscles to force water through the gills, so it only occurs while moving.
