The Haitian “death squads” under both Papa Doc and Baby Doc were called; the Ton Ton Macoute, and they murdered and “disappeared” thousands of innocent Haitians. They used machetes.

Went to Haiti in 1972. Very interesting place with wonderful food and people. We went walking in a neighborhood and saw a Lamborghini in a shed and looked across the street and saw a women with her laundry in a basket on her head leading an oxen down toward the river. Also saw fires in the country with people doing(?) voodoo near them. Pretty amazing place.

Went into Haiti in 1971 with the Marine Corps off the USS Inchon. Poorest place I had ever been. People were pretty good, but a lot of beggars. TADed to Cuba in 1994-95 where the US put 15000 Haitians and 15000 Cubans trying to get to vetted to escape communist and dictators. These people convinced me to be conservative.
