As a lifelong Chicagoan I can tell you that the origin of the nickname is related to politics going back to the days of the Carpetbaggers. Although Chicago is a Windy city weather wise, it's nowhere near the windiest cities in the United States. Most (not all) of those cities are further south especially in Texas

in about 1957 Cincinnati changed the name from Cincinnati Red Stockings to Cincinnati Red Legs. We just call them The Reds. Cincinnati is a great little town.
