used to watch them fly in and out of the base in South Viet Nam when I served there. A sight to behold.

A Chinook is also a warm wind in western Canada that melts snow where it blows in winter. Calgary gets them often.

UnopposedYogi27101, I served in the Falklands Conflict, and helped to do a "INFLIGHT REFUEL" the pilot would not land, due to the ongoing live action ,at the time.He hovered, just off the ground. We had to stand on each others shoulders to connect the fuel line.

The picture is amazing - just the tip of the hovering helicopter sittjng on the platform where they're apparently loading people in wartime. What amazing pilots!

Living near adore force bases, I sometimes hear these from far off. They have a distinctive sound and are very loud.

Read the caption on the picture - wild!

I taught elementary school about a mile from where these helicopters are used for mountain training. They flew over our playground at recess. Kids didn’t even notice after a while even though they were low and loud. We could feel the air displacement. A rumbling feeling in whole body too from sound.

Player Say what!?
Lucybird, I live about 3 miles from a Navy base and they frequently fly directly over my house at maybe 500 feet high. Still, to this day when I hear that very distinct sound, unlike your students I STILL run out to look up. They're fascinating to me.

tia
I used to work near Whittington Barracks in Staffordshire and saw them occasionally landing in my lunch break

Got to fly in a CH-46 in Hawaii in the late 80's. Really loud and reeked of fuel. Made me nauseous, but it was really cool!

I heard that it was named after a Chinook salmon is this right?

RICK-N-BACHER
TwoTin16, most US helicopters have Indian names, and not all are transports.

The RAF have a saying, "There is no problem that cannot be solved with two Chinooks"

DSDA, which is why I think they chose Chinook for this helicopter. I think itvwas the first named after a tribe, maybe the Kiowa? But I think that tradition followed the Chinook/wind/big helicopter connection.
