Actually, in Germany the relevant porridge isn't made from oats, but with semolina & milk....prob when they were frugal just with water and a bit sugar& cinnamon on top= the rich version has it made with milk, an extra eggyolk in it and a butterpad on top with cinnamon-sugar /or honey!
