If that last paragraph is true, and the computer is indistinguishable from a conscious mind in all its responses, then to all intents and purposes it is a conscious mind. However i understand the thrust of the thought experiment - that, despite all appearances, the illusion of consciousness is not the same as the reality of it. Interesting stuff.

I believe his ultimate point is that the computer can only give the impression that it is conscious, but it's really just a sophisticated program. Another way to look at it: we have sciences. We can reproduce an experiment over and over and expect the same result. Even with human physiology, we can expect the same results taking into account any unusual factors. Psychology is not a science. It is like a science but, because you cannot recreate an experiment and get the same result. You can predict tendencies, but the human individual has a unique mind and may completely buck a trend--even their own trends! That's the difference between a mind and a program.

Very fascinating. It really makes me think of the unconscious. The closest computers might get to unconsciousness would be through digital memory that’s charged through one’s intention to turn it on. To spontaneously activate would be through it’s natural instinct and to intentionally work around anything else would be an thriving intelligence.
