All that info and not one word where to find them or a physical description. Still it was an interesting question and answer. They can be found in Australia and the South Pacific.

The ones in Victoria Australia are called malleefowl ,because they mainly nest in a semi desert area called the Mallee. I once watched a mound over a couple of days when I was on an Army exercise in the area. The male bird attended every day and scratched a hole, put his head in and then spent some time rearranging the height of the mound. I found out later that he was initially testing the internal temperature which he felt with his beak,and then adding or removing the mound material to keep the buried eggs at a constant temperature.
