We ate the 12 grapes at midnight on New Year's Eve in Spain. It was fun to follow an old tradition.

I take it slowly, Yes, I did some research and you are correct. It was an old tradition from 1895, revived in 1901 (?) by grape growers as a marketing gimmick. That's all it is - a way to make money.
Just treat it as a fun activity with no power over anyone.

We must give thanks to a producers of grapes at beginning of twentieth century, who had overstock of grapes and had the clever idea to sell them to people telling the new tradition. They knew that people we like to believe in superstitions and...they had a big success!!!
