What is the taxonomical difference between pigeons and doves?

In Spanish the word for dove and pigeon is "paloma".

In Swedish the word is "duva".

Not true in Africa. in the family Columbidae, there are the genera Streptopelia (doves) and Columba (pigeons). These are the scientific terms and they are respected in everyday speech.
