“Bedlam” is a contracted mispronunciation of Bethlehem by London locals.

In Dracula movies, I think of it as the place where Dracula's human assistant eats cockroaches.

It was treated as a zoo or freak show and people would pay to walk through and be able to make fun of the inmates.
