In which country did the hippie subculture originate as a movement?

I was so lucky. I graduated from Monterey, Ca High in 1968 and got to see the beginnings of the hippie movement and the beginnings of so many great bands all through my school years. I really was in the right place at the right time. I surfed and had a part time job but I was still a hippie at heart, still am.

BooBoo9339, I graduated from high school in 1966. Even in Kentucky, we were hippies. I loved the music, tie dies, fringe and loose clothing. I was not into all that sex and drug stuff.
